Flip This Pattern: Reversible Wrap Roller Skate Dress

I had so much fun flipping the roller skate dress that I decided to do it again. I have so many ideas for fun flips of this pattern. I decided that my second flip would be a reversible wrap dress, in fact a four way wrap dress. My last flip was soft subtle colours (I like those kinds of colours the most), so this time I decided to go with some vibrant bright colours just to be different.
Flip This Pattern

An explanation of the method (without photos, sorry):
I started off by tracing the front of the pattern twice and taping it together at the centre fold. Then I drew and cut a gentle curve to make the wrap shape. I  took a few shots along the way but they are at night with my phone so not great quality. I sewed the fronts and back together at the shoulders and then sewed the arm openings (with piping,  that I made myself!!) then the neck and front opening.. I then turned it right side out and sewed the side seams.  Then  I sewed the casing  (leaving openings at the fronts to thread the tie through). Then I flipped the bottom hem over the rest of the garment (right sides facing) and stitched the lining and outer together leaving a small opening to turn. I made a tie from the same fabric I made the piping from. I hand stitched the hem opening closed. Then I made button holes in the side seams near the casing.

So the things that are "flipped"
- I made two front pieces and hand drew the change of shape
- I used piping on all the places where the inside and outside fabric would have met
- I used a tie made from binding in place of elastic
- I added button holes to thread the tie through to the back
- I made the back pieces from single pieces (no centre seam)
- and I changed the order of construction to accommodate the changes :)

And... the end result...

and the other way...

I love that it can be wrapped four ways. Great for covering up any messes my little miss makes.

Some of the details. My first attempt at piping. I think I may have to put piping on everything from now on :/

Some shots of my Eloise wearing it. I made it a little big to fit her in the warmer weather but given it has the tie it is totally adjustable width wise and should actually grow with her to become a tunic when she's taller. The recorder is in all the shots, she wasn't letting it go.

(This back view is my favourite. I love the simple shape of this dress)

Eloise wasn't in the best photo taking mood...

and she was even less impressed when I changed it to the lime side :(

I have had a lot of fun making this wrap. I will probably be making another one with different fabric and if I do I'll try to take some decent shots along the way and do up a tutorial. There are so many other cute ideas over at Frances Suzanne's Flip this pattern check them out.

Please leave a comment to let me know what you think.
